In the 13 century Wayanad was under the rule of Kottayam kings. The territories under their control were divided into ten areas,for administrative purpose.Each area were ruled by Nair chieves of respective regions.This leaders were authorized to regulate law and order and resolve disputes.The kuppathottu Nair family were entitled to rule kuppathottu amsam,Pakkom and Pulpally areas of Wayanad. Kuppathodu Nair was very prominent leader among Nair rulers. Kelom tharavad were belongs to them.It was built as nalukettu style of Kerala architecture. The Kottayam kings were used to stay at Keloth Tharavdu when they were visiting Wayanad.The legendary ruler of Malabar Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja stayed in this mansion during his war against the British.
